Description
This late 1940s skirt is made of crisp, lightweight plain weave cotton in a spearmint green batik or wax-print design, with hints of pale yellow and navy blue. This African-style wax print cotton fabric has a bonus element hidden in it: the Nigerian word “ngozi” meaning blessed or blessings is crisscrossed in the center of the circular patterns between the larger floral designs. The skirt has a wide, fitted waistband made from a differently-patterned part of the same cotton fabric. It is fastened with 2 buttons and a metal zipper at the left side seam. The skirt silhouette is typical of the late 1940s: less narrow than earlier in the decade, but not yet extra-full like a 50s circle skirt. There are small gathers that add fullness where the skirt fabric meets the fitted waistband. The cotton fabric is unlined. This unique novelty print 1940s skirt is in excellent condition, with just the slightest bit of wash-fade to the print from normal laundering.
