Description

This coral orange rayon crepe 1930s bias cut evening gown is a classic of vintage formalwear! It features long, lean lines and a sultry halter neck bodice with a flattering, racer-back design. The cutout shoulders can be covered against any chill with the matching bolero-style jacket, which fastens in front with covered buttons and loops. The fitted bodice of the dress features diagonal underbust seaming above the extra-long peplum or overskirt. The V-neck bodice has no fastenings at the back of the neck. The trompe l’oeil tie at the center back of the halter strap is non-functional. The only opening in the gown is a row of snaps in the left side seam. Underneath the knee-length peplum or overskirt, the full-length underskirt is attached at the underbust seams with a layer of matching orange tulle, serving as a partial lining. This underskirt layer has side slits at the hem. Overall, the dress has a narrow, columnar shape, the bias-cut fabric skimming over the body from neck to hem. The bolero jacket has narrow, curved lapels and short, dolman sleeves with relatively small arm openings (see measurements). It is unlined. In good, sturdy and wearable condition, the dress and jacket set has a fair number of faint marks on the crepe fabric, many of which are hard to notice, but some are clearly visible in my bright photo lighting. It has been freshly dry-cleaned, but not spot treated. There is also 1 tiny pinhole in the overskirt (see photo). This elegant 1930s bias-cut gown and jacket set presents quite well and is gently priced, based on the condition. Not perfect, but perfectly lovely!

DRESS:

  • Bust: 35 inches pulled flat, to fit approx. 34. Probably best for 34A or 32A-B.
  • Waist: 26 inches unstretched, stretching up to 29 max. Best for 25-27 inches.
  • Hip: 34 inches unstretched, stretching up to 39 max. Best for 32-37 inches.
  • Length: 57 inches from back of neck to hem, laid flat. Will pull up a bit shorter when worn, due to bias-cut fabric.
  • Back of neck to waist seam: approx. 15 inches.
  • Waist seam to hem of peplum: 28 inches.

JACKET:

  • Length: 16.5 inches, laid flat, from back of neck to hem.
  • Sleeve length: approx. 8.5 inches.
  • Sleeve opening: 12 inches max, at biceps.
