Description
The perfect late winter or early spring suit for a chilly day (think Easter parade in New York, for example!), this bright, multicolored pastel tweed wool 1960s skirt suit was made by Originala. They were a New York-based fashion house, opened in 1941, known for their high-quality suits and coats. According to the Vintage Fashion Guild's label resource, designers at Originala in the 60s included Marc Bohan (before he designed at Dior) and Ilie Wacs. For reference, Originala coats were quite expensive at the time, costing up to $500 in the late 60s--that's over $5000 in today's money!
The hip-length jacket is gently shaped through the bust and waist with vertical seaming. It has 4 patch pockets fastened with gold-tone, textured metal buttons to match those that close it in front. The pockets, notched collar, sleeve cuffs, and front opening of the jacket are all trimmed with wide braid in bright pink, pale blue, lilac and leaf green. The braid trim matches the bright colors woven into the cream or off-white background of the mid-weight “homespun”-weave wool. 2 more metal buttons trim each three-quarter-length sleeve. The knee length pencil skirt has a fitted waist and somewhat narrow hips (see measurements). It fastens with a nylon zipper in back, plus 2 large hooks at the waistband. Both pieces are fully lined in mint green polyester (or poly and acetate blend) lightweight crepe.
This fuzzy, colorful tweed wool 1960s ladies’ suit has the Originala label, along with a label from a former high-end retailer in Chicago, Stanley Korshak. It is in very good, near excellent condition: the only issue to note is some wear to the finish on the surface of the gold-tone metal buttons. The suit has been freshly dry-cleaned and looks great!
