Description
This unusual 1960s novelty print cotton dress is labeled as made in Honolulu by Kahala, for the “Marjy Stevens Hawaiian Shop”, located in Arizona. I have not seen this exact scenic novelty print before, and have had no luck in researching it. It looks like a harbor scene, with 2 large buildings along the shore (warehouse and hotel, perhaps?) and a mountainside town in the distance, along with watercolor-style flowers and foliage in the foreground.
The sleeveless shift dress has bust darts to shape the fitted, scoop-neck bodice, and a slightly flared skirt. The rich blues, greens, pinks, and browns in the soft cotton sateen print fabric are accented with plain teal cotton trim at the underbust/high waist seam. The trim/waist seam curves down towards the center back of the dress, ending in a small bow with long ends. The dress is unlined and fastens in back with a nylon zipper. The back of the skirt has a wide inverted pleat that adds fullness to the otherwise relatively straight shape of the shift dress. There are 2 side seam hips pockets—hooray!
This 1960s Hawaiian dress by Kahala is in excellent condition, with no flaws to note.
