Description

A late 1940s cocktail dress in black rayon crepe, this stylish LBD features a big portrait collar in crisp rayon taffeta that extends diagonally down to the waist on its right side. Here, an inset waistband panel gives the illusion of a wide belt or sash, with the gathered taffeta fabric “tucked” underneath it, and finishing in a double side drape on the left hip. Tiny gathers above and below the waistband panel in front, and darts in back, add a bit of fullness to the bust and hips. The dress originally had a matching narrow belt, which is no longer present; just the thread belt loops remain. It fastens on the left side with a metal zipper. The lightweight fabric is unlined. In very good condition, this true vintage late 1940s dress has a few tiny scuffs on the surface of the taffeta collar fabric and one slightly larger scuff in the surface of the crepe fabric on the right front of the skirt. None of these minor imperfections are likely to be noticed when the dress is worn. It has been freshly dry-cleaned, and has no other issues to note. I have shown the dress unpinned from the mannequin in my last photo, to give a better idea of its actual size.
