Description
This black rayon satin late 1940s or very early 1950s bonnet or halo style hat has a pleated, folded-back brim on its right side, trimmed with small, cream-colored pearls. The front and left side of the brim are folded back and away from the face. The way the brim is shaped creates the look of a large bow framing the face—quite lovely! The rounded, shallow crown is soft and unstructured. Its curving seaming is designed for best fit towards the back of the head, as shown, like a small bonnet. The unwired, soft brim continues around the back of the head, but is much more narrow than it is in front.
The hat is lined with stiff black rayon taffeta, plus an inner grosgrain ribbon band. It is very good condition, with a few minor scuffs to the shiny surface of the satin fabric, unlikely to be noticed when the hat is worn. I have lightened my close-up photo of the back of the crown to show them better. This charming late 1940s or early 50s black satin cocktail hat has no other issues to note.
