This deadstock, late 1950s or early 1960s skirt suit in black knit wool is a sporty style with a boxy jacket that is styled more like a blouse than a tailored suit. The jacket or top features a scarf-tie neckline, bust darts for gentle shaping, a straight hem (at about high hip level) with small notches at each side seam, and straight, bracelet-length sleeves with fitted cuffs. The jacket shoulders are soft and unpadded. Overall, the jacket has an unstructured feel, with no lining, intended for a slightly loose and easy fit. The jacket’s front opening and sleeve cuffs both fasten with covered buttons. The matching pencil skirt has a narrow, fitted waistband. It closes at the side seam with metal zipper and single button. Darts shape the skirt hips. It has no kick pleat or slit at the narrow hem. Like the jacket, the skirt is unlined.
