Description
This red-dyed Chinese lanterns design graduated bead necklace dates from the 1930s. I believe that the bead material is celluloid, not Bakelite, although the large beads do have carved designs in them similar to Bakelite jewelry. The chunky beads are fairly heavy and completely over-dyed, with no area to test easily. Do be careful about getting this necklace wet, since the dye may transfer, as it did when I attempted a hot water test—oops! Since the concentric ridges on each bead appeared molded and not carved (without the mold lines that a more modern plastic jewelry piece might have), celluloid is my best guess. Whichever kind of early plastic the beads may be, they are pretty! They are a bright strawberry red, with a pinkish tone. The beads are strung on red string, and fasten with a creamy-ivory celluloid barrel clasp. This true vintage 1930s necklace is in very good condition with some minor and subtle dye loss to the beads near the back.
