Description
By the middle of the 20th century, Davidow was known for their fine quality, ready-to-wear tweed suits (including authorized Chanel copies), available in better US department stores. This tweed wool tweed early-to-mid 1960s skirt suit is not of the classic cardigan suit variety, but it is quite well made and perfect for fall and winter! The gorgeous, mid-weight wool fabric combines orange-red, lime green, chestnut brown, black, and cream in a large-scale houndstooth pattern. The somewhat boxy-fit jacket is gently shaped at the waist by vertical darts. It has medium-sized shoulder pads, bracelet-length sleeves, a small collar, a curved hem with 2 small pleats at the back, and 2 tiny pockets with pocket flaps. The jacket fastens with bright green plastic buttons. The gently flared, A-line skirt has an extra-high, fitted waistband and a deep inverted front pleat. Tiny pleats where the skirt meets the fitted waistband add a bit of fullness at the front hips. There are 2 slit pockets in the sides of the skirt, which has an off-set zipper further back on the left side. (The seams of the skirt are not at the actual sides, where the pockets are, but just behind the sides, where the zipper is located (see photo). The skirt fastens with a nylon zipper below 3 large metal hooks and thread loops which close the extra-high, wide waistband. Both the skirt and jacket are lined with bright green rayon crepe. Additionally, the skirt has taupe poly-cotton blend fabric lining the waistband only, where the remains of a sticker have left a mark which is not seen when the suit is worn (see photo). The suit is in very good, near excellent condition, freshly dry-cleaned, with no other issues to note. If you are looking for a exceptionally well-made vintage tweed wool skirt suit, this houndstooth 1960s Davidow version is a great choice!
