Description

This flounced hem, green and off-white gingham check cotton skirt was created by removing the top of a 1930s or early 1940s tea-length dress. I’m not sure why the original owner made this decision, but I’m very glad that she saved this darling skirt for posterity! Perfect for a summer party or event, the calf-length skirt features 2 double-layered ruffles or flounces in emerald green organdy at the wide hem. A strip of “horsehair” finishes the lowest part of the hem, to add shape and body when it is worn. The skirt has a clean waistband, slightly curved, and backed with binding tape. It fastens with a circa 1940s-era metal side zipper and a small hook at the waist. The lightweight cotton gingham of the upper section of the skirt is unlined. The sheer organdy double-layered ruffles are both lined with a 3rd layer of gingham. The overall shape is gently flaring from the waist to the full hem.

In very good condition, the skirt has a small tear in the underlayer of 1 ruffled section (see close-up photo). Also the off-white parts of the gingham checked fabric may have once been bright white, but are currently more like cream. The white halter shown in my photos is already sold, but gives a good idea of what this sweet 1930s-40s cotton skirt will look like if worn with a cropped top.
