Description
This African style hat from Ghana is called a bolga. Made of “straw” that is actually hand-woven elephant grass, it has a 2-tone golden-tan and dark purple-brown colorway. The hat resembles a stingy-brim fedora, but with a more tapered crown shape. The hat came to me in a collection with several other vintage men’s hats from the 1950s-60s, but this one may be newer than that, since the traditional style makes it very hard to date. It is definitely vintage/before the early 2000s, based on where it was sourced, but that is as close as I can get! The hat is a small size for a man, but would certainly fit a lady’s head too. It measures to a hat size 6 7/8 or 7. In excellent condition, this woven straw bolga hat from Ghana will be breathable and comfy for hot summer weather.
