Description

This circa 1900s, Edwardian underskirt is made of midweight black polished cotton, with a lovely sheen and feel to its smooth and shiny fabric. The ankle-length underskirt (or skirt, if you prefer!) has a wide ruffle around the hem. The skirt is gathered below the narrow waistband to add fullness all around. It is a bit longer and even more full at the center back than it is at the front and sides. The center back slit below the waist is fastened with a single hook and eye. The center back waist is slightly curved, to dip lower than the rest of the waistband. The polished cotton fabric is unlined except where it is doubled (2 layers of the same fabric) at the hem flounce.

A diagonal mend in the fabric near the center back hem was done well, and looks like an added seam (see close-up photo). It should be difficult to note when the skirt is worn, since it is so near the ground. There is also 1 tiny mend in the waistband (see photo).

In very good condition, the skirt has no other flaws to note. This black cotton, antique Edwardian underskirt was originally intended for wear underneath another skirt. I think it is quite nice enough to wear on its own, myself!
